A very special know-how passed on from one generation to the next by the Compagnons, a French medieval guild. Brought to life in the bespoke atelier at No. 1 Rue Volney, Paris.

The pursuit of perfection in bootmaking is like a never-ending quest, a constant challenge to reach excellence. Knowledge, savoir-faire and experimentation are at the heart of Maison Corthay. Playing with materials, techniques, colours and shapes.

Compagnon

In 1979, the young Pierre began his apprenticeship with the famous French Compagnons du Devoir, one of the most rigorous and demanding training schools for craftsmen in the world. Thus began Pierre’s journey in bootmaking.

Family

Having learnt the trade from the world’s best, Pierre opened his own atelier in 1990 at the age of 27. Soon after, Christophe Corthay, his younger brother, joined Pierre. Together, the brothers began designing and crafting the most audacious shapes and glazing them with the most subtle patinas imaginable. This was the start of a wonderful journey.

Maître d’Art

Known for his talent, Pierre Corthay received the distinction of Maitre d’Art in 2009, which was presented by the French Minister of Culture in 2009 to the ‘crème de la crème’ of French craftsmen. To this day, Pierre Corthay remains the only mensbootmaker to have been awarded with this prestigious honour.

Know-how

Timeless. The results suggest eternity – hours of work that filter through the stitches, the color of the leathers and their special patinas – the ancestral motions repeated to produce exceptionally crafted shoes.

 Shape

Pierre Corthay has been fascinated by textures and shapes since his youth. His grandaunt, Valentine Schlegel, a modernist ceramic sculptor with a love for curves, introduced him to a universe of contours and construction by teaching him the foundationsof the art. Twenty years on, the desire for purity and prominence can be traced throughout Pierre Corthay’s creations. Hence, the Corthay shoe is renowned for its distinctive silhouette and sleek lines, sculpted aerodynamics in leather with a distinctive twist.
